Mighty Acorn farm is a part-time, seasonal growing operation specializing in nutritious varieties of regionally adapted produce.

Why we Grow

There continues to be a need for less traveled food picked at the peak of nutrition and varieties grown for taste, not shelf life.

About Farmer John

Growing up in St. James, Missouri, specialty crops were a part of the livelihood of many families. John worked in some of the many vineyards and orchards, and the intensive labor required to manage these plantings became a springboard for bigger things. Gardening was also an extended family affair. John spent many hours assisting his grandparents and extended family with produce cultivation. John has been selling at the Columbia Farmers Market for over 20 years, allowing him to perfect the art of sustainable growing.

Growing Practices

Our soil amendments are all naturally derived and include leaf mulch, cover crops, mealworm frass, and fish emulsion. Weed control is achieved by silage tarp, munch, and hand cultivation, and no synthetic chemicals have been used on our farm in the 12 years it has been under our care.

What we Grow

We feature salad greens, microgreens, shoots, lettuce, spinach, and much more during the early season. During the mid-season, we focus on all of the anticipated taste treats such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, onions, and more. We choose our varieties based on customer feedback, our own rigorous tasting, and cooking trials, and unique selections dense in flavor picked as close to market time as possible. Fall offerings are winter squash, more salad offerings, and microgreens during the cold months, as our schedule allows.
